Enrichment Reading

Build Comprehension and Critical Thinking Skills

Students need to be challenged beyond the basic skills of reading and vocabulary offered by most reading curriculums.  Research states that successful students know how to read well, comprehend what they read, and apply what they comprehend to new learning situations. Because Enrichment Reading helps students develop their higher-level thinking skills, it sharpens the critical thinking and comprehension skills of the poor and average reader as well as the advanced reader.

Enrichment Reading is unique because it was designed without illustrations to prevent students from using pictures as context clues for comprehension and understanding. Also, it highlights vocabulary words at their point of use, which helps the reader understand each word as it is used in the context of the sentence. Ten review questions for each reading selection build critical thinking skills.

Most importantly, Enrichment Reading focuses on biblical integration with a section after each story that discusses biblical principles found in the reading selection. This section teaches students to interpret literature from a biblical worldview perspective.

Enrichment Reading is flexible. Teachers decide how much time to spend on each story. Some teachers break a story into several days—reviewing the vocabulary words one day, reading the story the next, and having students answer the questions the following day—while others complete each story during a specified time frame on a given day.

In addition to using Enrichment Reading during the school year, it is a great resource to use during the summer or in after-school remedial and enrichment classes.
